ILUSTRARTE is an opportunity to see the world’s best illustration and to bring together in Lisbon illustrators, writers and readers of all ages.
Illustrators from all over the world are invited to take part on the competition sending 3 original illustrations, unpublished or published after January 2009.
Since I really want to get into childrens illustration, I thought I’d give this comp a go and came up with 3 illustrations based on a short story I’d come across. I’m hoping to get these printed so I have plenty of time to submit them but I’m reeeeeally nervous about doing so for some reason!
This is the first time I’ve illustrated anything for a story so it was quite challenging, but really good fun – I can’t wait to do more of this in the future.
I tend to use the phrase “I can’t really draw” quite often, by which I mean I’m not at all sure about my life drawing “skills”, and although I can generally draw something in front of me and it looks fine – that’s pretty much all I can do. My problem being I get frustrated when what I draw doesn’t look EXACTLY like it does in real life.
I’ve never been good at giving drawings depth with shading, more so when I’m drawing people (let’s not go there, I stuffed my drawings from life drawing classes away in the back of a cupboard) but sometimes if I’ve drawn something I get a bit mixed up with light direction and applying darker shades etc. This week I was in the garden with Brooke and as it was coming into the evening you could see the different dark/light contrasts on the slats of wood on my shed. So I drew part of it, and had my first reasonable attempt at shading. Quite happy with this attempt, I definitely need to keep at it.
